FOR THOSE SEEKING THAT PRISTINE EXPERIENCE of discovering an almost
completely undisturbed, unspoilt island in
the Indian Ocean – then Desroches is the ideal destination.
This coral atoll belongs to the island nation of the Seychelles,
in the Indian Ocean and lies some 30 minutes by air,
south west of Mahé.
Its the only island in the Amirantes group open to tourists and its quite
simply – paradise. The tropical climate produces an all year round,
moderately warm temperature tempered pleasantly by the Indian Ocean sea
breezes. Although there are no seasons as such, the best months to visit
this coral atoll with its breathtaking beaches and its unique fauna and
flora, are March, April, May, October and November.
The Desroches Island Resort itself (part of the prestigious Naïade Resorts
Group) is indescribable – it really has to be seen. The
small island is 6.2 km long and only 1 km wide. Its
coastline is fringed by 15 km of fine, sandy beaches. Desroches
was once an important supplier of cobra and even today the island has one of
the finest coconut groves in the Seychelles.

The Desroches Island Resort is the perfect base to discover this island
paradise and with the exclusivity that this hideaway location offers, it's
no wonder the resort is a well-deserved member of the “Small Luxury Hotels
of the World”. The accommodation consists of 20 junior suites in 10 double
chalets spread out over the island. All the villas blend harmoniously with their
surroundings and the materials used reflect the relaxed feel of the place.
The interior designer has concentrated on using predominately dark, locally
grown timber along with deep, earthy colours. Much importance has been placed
on small details and with how best to use the natural light to try to
achieve that airy, tropical feeling. All the accommodation boasts top class
double beds with mosquito nets along with satellite TV, telephone, air
conditioning, mini bar and a large terrace with direct access to the beach.
For those wishing to explore the island further, there are bicycles on hand.
However, it's diving that really draws people to this island paradise.
With its unique underwater world consisting of 14 classified dive sites, the
island is especially popular with divers and underwater photographers and
offers ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced divers.
The diving school on the island is German-run. The island is one of the finest
locations for scuba diving, snorkelling and deep-sea fishing. But of course,
you can windsurf, go canoeing or play tennis as well. Or why not visit the
island spa to be pampered with an experienced Balinese massage under the warm
tropical sun.
The restaurant, “Le Veloutier”, located directly by
the pool, has fantastic views out to the sea and offers Creole-style, French
and cosmopolitan cuisine and of course, fresh fish! The
“Beach Restaurant” is open for breakfast and lunch
buffets or for an intimate candlelight dinner. Here you can sit back and enjoy
your meal under the shade of a straw-thatched roof with your feet in the
warm sand. In the evening, surrounded by the Indian Ocean and coconut palmtrees,
the Bar l'Amirante is the perfect location to sip a cocktail
while watching the sun go down.
A pristine paradise – holiday surely can't get
more paradisiacal as this – yet it's only a nine hour flight
away from Europe!
